Today marks day one of orientation for Fulbright. A group of us arrived a day prior to have the train travel behind us and enjoy some of the beautiful scenery and history in Marburg. We stayed in this lovely and chic flat surrounded by a phenomenal view perfect for a group of friends in need of an escape from the city. While we were only there for a night, we took full advantage of our amenities by sitting out on the terrace to enjoy the views, picked fresh flowers for the table, and walked to the store to make a nice brunch before leaving.

The orientation was short and sweet today because tomorrow they will spend most of the time going through our bureaucracy checklists. Today involved checking into the hotel, brief introductions, a lovely walking tour, and dinner (which was paid for!).

A snapshot of some of the things we did and drank. (Cappuccinos for days!)

A depiction of what the “old“ types of buildings look like in Marburg (even though this one is only a century old...).

We had great views on our walking tour, which were what I focused on when I couldn’t understand the tour guide (who was speaking in German)!

Here is an homage to one of the of Grimms Brothers stories: the Wolf and the Seven Goats. The brothers actually lived and studied in Marburg, so there are numerous subtle mentions to their stories and lives throughout the city.

After the group tour had ended, we all gathered together to eat dinner in a Keller (or beer cellar). We shared great conversations, and afterwards were able to share our first (of many) group beer outing(s). I have met such amazing and intelligent people here, and I am so incredibly excited to hear how their stories pan out over this grant period!
